Lucy

Little Lucy was found wandering the hills of Ventura county by co-owner Joey Herrick's son, Dylan. At first site, Dylan thought Lucy was a baby coyote, as she was completely grey. He went and got his mom and they set out to investigate, as they thought it was odd that the pup was all alone.

It took over half an hour until they were able to get close enough to discover that this was a small dog, covered in dirt, with tire marks across her body. She must have been hit by a car, and hid in the mountains to recover.

They immediately snatched her up and took her to a vet. The veterinarian checked her thoroughly, and found that she was healthy, and had no broken bones or internal injuries. The Herrick family decided to keep her and wanted to have her spayed, but the vet suggested they wait three weeks until she gained some weight, as she was a little thin, and her coat was in terrible shape (click on her photos at right). This would also give her some time to recuperate from her trauma.

About 2 and a half weeks later, and seemingly overnight, Lucy's belly became very large. They took her back to the vet, who discovered that she was pregnant, and would soon have a litter. Lucy recently gave birth to 5 healthy puppies!

DVPDick Van Patten's Natural Balance Pet Foods has set up our very own "For Charities" Program. We have also been at the forefront of national rescue efforts, such as the Katrina disaster.

Over the years I've asked Natural Balance® customers to "help me help animals" and here's how you can help homeless, abused and neglected animals everywhere!

Spread the word! Work with your favorite retailer or vet on a donation program. Tell everyone in your network to cut out the UPC code from the specified size Natural Balance® bagged food, case of canned food, 2.5 lb or 4 lb roll purchased from their retailer and attach it to the register receipt as a proof-of-purchase (see the chart on our For Charities for explanation of rebates).

Request that they donate the UPC and receipt* to your Charity - it's just like donating money. When your Charity has collected 50 UPC codes, send them to us and you will receive a check made out to your Nonprofit Animal Charity.

Sincerely,

DVP
